TL;DR

You are probably not getting the SPF on the label. Not because the product doesn’t work, but because of how much you apply — and how it interacts with everything else on your face.
The dosing problem
SPF is measured in standardised laboratory conditions at an application density of 2 mg/cm². For the average adult face and neck, this roughly corresponds to approximately half a teaspoon, or two finger lengths of product — though face size varies, so these are practical heuristics rather than exact measurements. Most people apply substantially less than this in real-world use.
The relationship between how much you apply and the protection you actually get is not a simple proportional one — sunscreen performance doesn’t scale neatly with quantity. But applying substantially less than the tested amount can reduce protection far below the labelled SPF, often much more than people realise. An SPF 50 applied thinly does not provide anything close to SPF 50 protection in practice.
This is not a reason to buy higher SPF products. It is a reason to apply more of what you already have. SPF 50 does provide a larger margin of error than SPF 30 when real-world application is imperfect — which it usually is — but neither substitutes for applying an adequate amount in the first place.
The layering problem
SPF applied under other products — foundation, powder, blush — can have its protective film disrupted by the blending, brushing, and rubbing involved in applying what goes over it. The issue is less about physical dilution and more about unevenness and disruption of the film’s integrity once other products are layered and blended on top. This is one reason cosmetics with SPF incorporated are generally inadequate as standalone sun protection: the amount of foundation required to achieve the labelled SPF is far more than typical application.
SPF should be the last skincare step in the morning routine. Products applied over it should be kept minimal and applied with a pressing rather than rubbing motion where possible, with the understanding that they may reduce the effective protection somewhat — not eliminate it. Many people wear foundation, blush, and powder over sunscreen without destroying its protection entirely; the protection is compromised, not negated.
What SPF tells you — and what it doesn’t
SPF measures UVB protection. It tells you little to nothing about UVA coverage on its own. UVA penetrates to the dermis and is the primary driver of photoageing and contributes to skin cancer risk. A product with high SPF and minimal UVA protection is protecting you from sunburn but not from the deeper UV damage that matters most for long-term skin health.
Broad-spectrum labelling indicates UVA protection is present, though the rigor behind that claim varies by region — European broad-spectrum requirements and rating systems like the UVA circle or PPD testing are relatively stringent, while US broad-spectrum labelling is a less granular pass/fail standard. The PA rating system — used in Japan, Korea, and increasingly globally — provides a graded UVA measure: PA+++ and PA++++ indicate strong UVA protection. When evaluating a sunscreen, both SPF and a meaningful UVA rating matter.
Reapplication
During sustained outdoor exposure, reapplication approximately every two hours maintains protection. This applies to outdoor activity, not to an office day with incidental sun exposure through a window — UVB does not penetrate glass meaningfully, and UVA does so at reduced intensity. For primarily indoor days, a single morning application is generally adequate for most people. Those with melasma, photosensitive conditions, or substantial daily window exposure may benefit from more frequent reapplication regardless of being indoors.
Reapplication isn’t only about time elapsed. Protection is also reduced by sweating, swimming, towelling off, touching the face repeatedly, and friction from masks or clothing. Any of these can warrant reapplication sooner than the standard two-hour guideline during outdoor activity.
⚠️ Clinical note: Sunscreen performance does not decline in a simple linear or precisely quantifiable way with reduced application — the exact reduction depends on formulation and filter chemistry. The reliable takeaway is that under-application meaningfully reduces real-world protection, not a specific numeric equivalence between application amount and resulting SPF.
