About Eden Openly

Knowledge changes lives. But only when people can trust it.

Eden Openly is an independent publication about the science and the experience of gender transition. It is written by a dermatologist who is also a transgender woman, funded by nobody, and free to read.

What you will find here

Evidence reviews. Structured reviews of the published literature, conducted to a formal, written method, with the certainty of the evidence graded and stated. Hormone therapy, puberty suppression, cardiovascular and thromboembolic risk, bone density, anti-androgens, monitoring and target ranges. Where the evidence is thin, the review says so rather than filling the gap with confidence.

Clinical explainers. Plain-language pieces on what hormones do and how care should work — oestrogen and the skin, SHBG, testosterone suppression, oral versus transdermal routes, informed consent, what monitoring is actually for.

Dermatology and skincare. Skin is an endocrine organ and it changes on hormone therapy. This is the author’s own specialty, and it is treated with the same standard of evidence as everything else.

Policy and public argument. Where healthcare decisions are made, what evidence they rest on, and whether that evidence supports what is claimed for it.

Personal writing. Discovering you are transgender at fifty-two, and what follows. Kept clearly separate from the evidence work, because the two do different jobs and mixing them serves neither.

Why it exists

Gender transition sits where medicine, psychology, ethics, law and politics meet, and the conversation is fragmented at every join. Evidence is separated from the people it describes. Policy is argued without reference to either. Research sits behind paywalls or inside language built to exclude.

The result is that trans people, their families and often their clinicians are making decisions without access to what is actually known — and, just as importantly, without knowing what is not known.

Understanding should not be limited to specialists. That is the whole of it.

How we work

Every piece begins with evidence. We work from primary sources, cite them so you can read them yourself, and distinguish plainly between what the evidence shows, what it implies and what we think.

We say when we are uncertain. We correct in public, with dated corrections that stay attached to the original piece. We also track errors in the published literature and record whether they have been corrected, because an uncorrected error goes on being cited for decades.

Our method, our evidence standards and our corrections policy are published in full, so that our work can be checked rather than trusted.

Who writes it

Eden Openly is written and edited by Eden — a dermatologist and a trans woman, writing about a subject she has both studied and lived.
