Why Open Access Matters
Knowledge should not depend on who can afford to reach it.
Most of the research that shapes healthcare sits behind subscriptions costing more than the treatments it describes. The policy documents that decide access are published in language built for committees. The people most affected by these decisions are, reliably, the people with the least means of reading them.
What we do
Everything on Eden Openly is free to read, in full, permanently. There is no paywall, no subscription, no metered access, no registration wall and no “premium” tier. There never will be.
Every evidence review we publish is deposited in a public archive and carries a DOI — a permanent identifier that makes it citable in the academic literature and retrievable whether or not this website continues to exist. Work that can disappear is not published; it is only posted.
How you may use it
Everything we publish is licensed under Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 (CC BY 4.0). You may copy it, quote it, translate it, print it, teach from it and republish it, including commercially, provided you credit the source and link back.
You do not need to ask us. Translation into any language is explicitly welcome, and we would like to hear about it so we can link to it.
One limit, which is not ours to remove: we cannot republish the papers we cite. Copyright in those belongs to their publishers. What we can do — and do — is describe their methods and findings accurately enough that you understand what they actually show.
Open access is not simplified access
Accessible does not mean watered down. We translate complex material while keeping its nuance, its uncertainty and its limits intact. Where a finding is contested, we say so. Where the evidence is weak, we say that too, rather than rounding it up for readability.
Treating readers as capable of handling complexity is itself a form of respect.
Reading without being watched
We carry no advertising and no advertising trackers. We do not use Google Analytics or any similar product, and we do not sell, share or rent data about our readers to anyone.
We do count page views, using GoatCounter — open-source, privacy-focused analytics that sets no cookies, stores no personal data and does not follow anyone across other websites. It tells us that a page was read. It cannot tell us who read it, and neither can we.
On this subject that is not a technical footnote. People read about gender and hormones from borrowed phones, family computers and workplace networks, sometimes years before they tell anyone. Access means being able to read something without it following you afterwards.
Why it matters
Understanding the evidence lets people ask sharper questions, notice when a clinician is guessing, and take part in decisions about their own bodies as participants rather than subjects.
Open access is not a publishing model we have adopted. It is the reason the publication exists.
Our commitment
Everything we publish will remain free, in full, with no conditions attached to reading it.
Because understanding should never depend on privilege.
