Skincare layering advice ranges from rigidly prescriptive to completely ignored. The truth is somewhere in between, and closer to the relaxed end than skincare culture usually suggests. Order matters for some products and barely at all for others. Most products are more forgiving than the rules imply.
The underlying logic
Absorption depends heavily on formulation and vehicle — lipophilicity, concentration, solvent, and how hydrated the skin is, not simply on molecular size. The thinnest-to-thickest heuristic is a practical rule rather than a law of physics, but it is widely used because lighter, water-based formulations spread more evenly and layer more predictably when applied before heavier, more occlusive products.
The idea that a moisturiser forms an impermeable barrier that blocks a serum applied afterward is overstated. Moisturisation often increases stratum corneum hydration, which can enhance rather than impede penetration of certain ingredients. Applying heavier products before lighter formulations may reduce the efficiency and consistency of delivery — this is a real effect, but it is not the dramatic blocking that skincare culture sometimes implies. It is why lighter products are generally applied first, not because anything afterward is wasted.
The sequence that makes sense
Cleanser first — removes surface oils, dead cells, and residue from the previous application.
Toner or essence, if used — typically thin and water-based, applied immediately after cleansing. Not essential for most routines, but not harmful either.
pH-dependent actives — AHAs, BHAs, and vitamin C (L-ascorbic acid) are usually applied early in the routine, mainly because this maximises direct contact with the skin and avoids unnecessary interference from heavier products layered first. The idea that a moisturiser applied afterward chemically neutralises these actives is an overstatement — well-formulated actives are largely self-buffered, and the skin’s surface pH re-equilibrates relatively quickly from any residual disruption between steps. The practical reason to apply them early is consistency of delivery, not preventing some dramatic deactivation.
Serums — water-based, targeted actives applied before moisturiser, mainly because lighter formulations are easier to layer predictably underneath a heavier product than over one.
Moisturiser — supports barrier function and seals in the layers beneath.
Oils and occlusives, if used — applied last. Petrolatum, mineral oil, and heavy occlusives genuinely do impede the penetration of anything applied afterward, so they belong at the end of the routine, not before water-based products.
SPF, morning only — always last. This is the most important sequencing rule in skincare. Anything applied over sunscreen risks disrupting the protective film, diluting coverage, or creating uneven distribution.
What order doesn’t significantly change
Most hydrating ingredients — hyaluronic acid, niacinamide, glycerin — absorb readily regardless of strict ordering relative to other thin serums. Rigid sequencing between these matters less than getting the major categories right.
The exceptions that actually matter: sunscreen should be the final skincare layer in the morning; heavy occlusives and oils belong after lighter formulations; and active ingredients are generally easier to use consistently when applied before moisturisers, rather than because of a precise chemical requirement.
One category that genuinely does supersede general layering advice: prescription medications. Tretinoin, adapalene, azelaic acid, and benzoyl peroxide often come with specific application instructions from a prescriber that should take priority over generic sequencing rules — follow those instructions over any general skincare guidance, including this post.

⚠️ Clinical note: Claims about pH-dependent actives being “neutralised” by subsequent products reflect older skincare wisdom more than current evidence. Well-formulated actives maintain their own pH environment, and the skin’s surface pH re-equilibrates relatively quickly from any disruption between steps. Prescription-strength actives should always follow specific instructions from the prescribing clinician.
