Many people use the same products morning and night, in the same order, and wonder why their skin isn’t improving. The problem usually isn’t the products. It’s the logic.
Morning is primarily about protection. Evening is primarily about treatment. That distinction is more defensible than saying mornings “protect” and evenings “repair” — repair implies a distinct biological process that isn’t strongly established. Treatment is the more accurate word for what’s actually happening.
The morning job: protection
You are about to expose your skin to UV radiation, environmental pollution, and oxidative stress. The morning routine exists to mitigate these. The priority is antioxidants and SPF.
Vitamin C (L-ascorbic acid) is the most evidence-based antioxidant for skincare use. It scavenges reactive oxygen species, complements sunscreen, has some evidence for reducing UV-induced pigmentation, and supports collagen. Antioxidants are often favoured in the morning because they complement daytime photoprotection — but they remain beneficial at other times of day too. Vitamin C applied at night is not wasted; oxidative stress continues from normal metabolism, inflammation, and residual pollution exposure even after dark, and vitamin C’s pigmentation and collagen-supporting effects don’t depend on time of day. Morning use is simply the more logical default given its role alongside SPF.
SPF is the non-negotiable close to any morning routine. Everything else is optional. SPF is not.
Retinoids are conventionally used at night, though adapalene in particular is photostable and can be used in the morning without meaningful degradation. AHAs and BHAs are generally better suited to evening use, as they can increase the skin’s sensitivity to UV through changes to the stratum corneum and a reduced UV injury threshold — the mechanism is more nuanced than simply removing a protective layer of dead skin. Niacinamide, hyaluronic acid, and ceramide moisturisers are fine in the morning — they are not photosensitising and are useful at any time of day.
The evening job: treatment
Overnight, the skin is not exposed to UV radiation, which makes evening a practical and convenient time for active ingredients that would otherwise be degraded by sunlight or that increase photosensitivity. This is largely a matter of practicality and tolerability rather than the skin being biologically more receptive to actives while sleeping — that idea is more widely repeated than it is established.
Retinoids at night avoid UV exposure during the period when skin is most sensitised by the retinoid’s effects on the stratum corneum. This is the primary practical reason for nighttime use, rather than retinoids working better because of sleep physiology specifically — retinoids work through binding nuclear receptors and altering gene transcription, a mechanism that operates independently of the sleep-wake cycle.
AHAs at night avoid the increased photosensitivity associated with daytime use and simplify photoprotection requirements. Ceramide moisturisers are useful at night to support barrier lipid replenishment, though they are equally valuable in the morning — there is no meaningful nighttime superiority for barrier support specifically.
The practical implication
You do not need two entirely different product ranges. You need to think about when each product is doing its most useful work. A retinoid applied in the morning means your skin is more UV-sensitive during the day unless you are using a photostable formulation and are rigorous about SPF. A chemical exfoliant in the morning is not harmful, but is suboptimal unless SPF reapplication is reliable.
The routine works when the logic is right, not when the product list is longest.
⚠️ Clinical note: The practical case for nighttime actives rests primarily on avoiding UV exposure and degradation — the circadian biology of skin cell turnover is real but its practical significance for topical ingredient uptake is less clearly established than skincare marketing suggests. The rationale for nighttime retinoid use is photostability and UV sensitivity avoidance, not a demonstrated advantage from sleep biology specifically.
